Client 1, an eight year old male right above knee amputee. Who is a resident of Kacungiro Kasese district, he is a second born whose parents are peasants and a primary school going child.
His leg was crushed by a motocycle spokes during transportation to a health center for malaria treatment , The lower limb got multiple communituted fractures which involved the tibia, fibula and the femur bones , was rushed to Kilembe hospital where he was amputated at the age of one and half .
He got his first prosthetic limb at 6 years which was a donation from a well-wisher. In 2023 he had outgrown the prosthetic limb and there was a need for a new prosthesis but the mother had no funds to get a new one but likely enough the Rehabilitation Department managed to lobby funds for his second limb which was fabricated from our Orthopedic workshop. He was assessed, measured and fabricated for a new prosthesis in October 2023 at the age of 8 years, trained gait and discharged.
Client 2 is a 12 year old male, a resident of Rukokii Sub County in Kasese district he is a 4th child of the siblings. He is left above knee amputee. His amputation was done following a snake bite when harvesting coffee with his parents. He was rushed to a peripheral clinic that later referred to Kagando hospital and after 2 weeks was amputated and later discharged after healing.
In 2021 one of their community members saw him without a limb using crutches and told his parent to come to Kagando hospital to see how we can help him. We also managed to get him a sponsor for his limb. He was assessed, measured and fabricated for a limb at the age of 10 years, trained gait and discharged.
In 2023 at age of 12 years his previous limb had out grown him and there was a need for a new prosthesis but still his parents couldn’t afford. We lobbied for him again for his new limb.
Client C is a 39 year old female bilateral through knee amputee. She is resident of Mirami Kasese. She was amputated due to wet gangrene in 2021. She healed in one month time. She was brought to the hospital Orthopedic workshop for the limbs, She was assessed , measured and fabricated for both through knee prostheses which were paid by rotary club Kasese , She was trained gait and discharged with a pair of elbow crutches for additional stability and she left the wheelchair and started using the limbs alone. She can now go back to do her previous work as a secretary and operate her retail shop.
Client D is a 27 year old male right above knee amputee is resident of Kizungu in Kasese and is a peasant. He lost his limb in road traffic accident when was knocked by a speeding motorcycle, his femur bone was crushed and was rushed to hospital where he was amputated from in 2021.
1n 2023 he was brought to our Orthopedic workshop; he was first assessed then measured and fabricated for right above knee prosthesis that was funded by a Rotarian. He was later trained gait and discharged. He can now do cultivation and his other daily activities with ease.

My Story:
My name is Baluku Ivan and i am 58 years of age male residing in Kanyughunyu Village, Kisinga subcounty Kasese district
I am a peasant farmer married to one wife and we have 2 children.
I was amputated below knee left lower limb in year 2018 following severe chemical burns of the left lower limb in the factory where i was working as a machinery operator. I have been unemployed since the tragedy.
Currently i use axilla crutches for mobility and i have not been able to raise funds for prosthetic limb because i have to look after my family.

Kibaba Emmanuel 26 years of age male residing in Kyondo Village Kasese district village. 2nd born of 4 children. Raised by a single parent mother who is a peasant as father neglected his family
He is married with one wife and has one child he was amputated above knee right lower limb at St. Mary’s Hospital Kasese following a road traffic accident 1 year ago where his limb was severely crushed. Before the accident he was a motorcyclist and used which was the source of income. Currently operates along road side making chapatti and snacks as a business, the operation requires a lot of standing which he can’t sustain with only axilla crutches.
He unable to raise funds for a prosthetic and look after his family.

In The Gap Ministries Sponsorships
How can you be involved and help some of these children get the Prosthesis they really need ?
Even at reduced prices for artificial limbs, clients/ patients are still unable to meet the cost. The money they pay is for sustainability of the project and later buying other materials when the available materials are done . The number that need the limbs is still high in the community but they can not afford even the reduced prices for the limbs. Some of those who have gotten the limbs have been paying by installment though most of them have failed to get the funds since most of the amputees do not have any economic activity and they are from very poor communities.
Below are the costs for different limbs .
Below knee prosthesis (adult) ……………………420,000 Uganda shillings. (NZ$190)
Above knee prosthesis (adult)………….530,000 Uganda shillings. (NZ$230)
Below knee prosthesis (child)…………….250,000 Uganda shillings. (NZ$113)
Above knee prosthesis (child)……………….320,000 Uganda shillings. (NZ$144)
In The Gap Ministries would like to Sponsor at least 2 or 3 Children on an ongoing basis to receive the prosthesis limbs they desperately need.
